How to Test AI Research Tools: A Repeatability Worksheet and Worked Example

Abstract

A free teaching activity for evaluating AI literature-search assistants through repeated use rather than one polished response. Learners run the same scholarly-search task three times, preserve visible sources, log test conditions and access failures, verify selected claims and classify results as stable, partially repeatable or unstable. The page includes a reusable five-page worksheet and a public 15-run example dataset covering ResearchRabbit, Elicit, Scite, Consensus and Undermind. The example is explicitly a small, dated free-tier observation set, not a universal product ranking.
