PewTranslate Census Language Lookup

Abstract

A free, account-free browser lookup of U.S. Census Bureau ACS 2020-2024 table C16001 home-language and English-ability estimates for ZIP Code Tabulation Areas and counties in the United States and Puerto Rico. The page displays speaker estimates and speaker-count margins of error, identifies the age-five-and-over population, and explains grouped language categories, geographic boundaries and the limits of applying area estimates to individuals. Its original purpose is community language-access planning; it can also provide a concrete data-literacy example for discussing source provenance, uncertainty and the distinction between population summaries and individual needs. Shareable area links help readers revisit the same geographic result. This is an AI-assisted interface to published Census data, not a validated teaching intervention or an independently collected dataset. It does not translate text, and PewTranslate live-translation accounts remain closed. The public lookup works independently of those accounts. No Creative Commons or public-domain licence is asserted for the interface or guide.
